Romanticism and Transcendentalism

ELAALRL2: The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

1) This standard is stating to me that i need to point out and break down the theme of the work that has been selected. Theme is a way of expressing the main idea through evidence from the text.

Romanticism: Intuition, Imagination, Feeling

2.) Work period: (Rip Van Winkle)

  1. very good husband

  2. a helpful person

  3. very well like

  4. good nature

3.) Thanatopsis

"She speaks various language ".This is an example of intution because it is telling us that she has geart knowledge.

" with a mild and healing sympathy, that steals away their sharpness, ere he is aware ". this is an example of feeling because the use of the words mild, sympathy.

"When thoughts of the last bitter hour come like a blight Over thy spirit, and sad images" This is an exapmle of Imagination because he is saying that the images are blight over spirit and sad.

4.)Georgia Performance Standards:

ELAALRL1: The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.

ELAALRL2: The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

ELAALRL3: The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

Transcendentalists:

Self Reliance :

I disagree with Emerson because he says,"Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of everyone of its members," and I believe that community is important for progress. You can't make it in the world alone, and Emerson argues that being Self reliant is how you succeed.

In Self Reliance Emerson states that " nothing is at last sacred but the intergrity of our own mind", which embodies the Transcendentalist theory which devalues organized religion, government, and encourages people to be themselves, and do good things.

Nature:

Nature is always there and Emerson thinks that we take it for granted. Emerson was writing during the Industrial Revolution when machinery and urbanization was becoming more popular. During the time when people were concerned with their properties and possessions," Miller owns this field, Locke that, and Manning the woodland beyond. But none of them owns the landscape."Emerson encourages his comtemporaries to take a step back and look at the stars, mountains and reflect on life alone.

Emerson thinks that it is his responsibility as a poet to take ownership of the landscape. In order for him to do that he must transcend through god and become one with heaven and earth. Emerson concludes that man must understand that " that the power to produce this delight does not reside in nature, but in man , or in a harmony of both." Meaning that nature is always present and humans should respect it. when that relationship has been established between nature and humanity one has reached transcendence.
